Lightweight 4 year old need carseat?

I am flying alone with my DS in July. He turns 4 in May, but he is on the light side. He's 39", but only about 30 lbs. Can someone please tell me the pros and cons of bringing his carseat for him to sit in on the plane at this stage? I will not need a carseat at my destination, and I will have to change planes once on the way and twice on the way back. TIA!

A CARES harness might be more appropriate in this situation, as long as he stays under the 40" height limit.

My son was a little larger than yours when we flew and he was definitely too small for the plane's lap belt (we used an Evenflo Maestro for him).
