Question Mazda 3 vs Subaru Impreza

My mom is trying to decide between these two. Price is a factor and the Subaru is a bit more but if it's a far superior car it might be worth it.

The safety ratings are great on both so really I feel like it comes down to reliability and true cost of ownership (which edmunds.com has the Impreza as being more expensive).

Thoughts?

Is resale value a consideration?
If so that would actually give the edge to the Imprezza as the resale value is much higher.
Having said that both are great vehicles, both have great safety features and ratings. I'd give the Imprezza the edge due to having AWD. I'd give the 3 the edge in price point as the price is slightly lower.

Tough call.

Drive and go with the one she likes the best :)

She keeps cars forever (her current car is 16 yrs old) so resale isn't a huge issue.

I like the AWD and of course I LOVE my Outback so now I'm partial to Subaru but we don't live where AWD is necessary and she doesn't like snow/mountains like we do :).

She drove the Mazda last night and really liked it. She just has to go drive the Subaru. I will say the one downside is we don't have super close Subaru dealer. We have to travel at least 30 minutes (we have one a bit closer but it has horrible customer service and reviews). So that's something to consider, Mazda is 10 minutes from us.

I would actually put in a vote for the Mazda 3 in a situation where resale and AWD aren't a huge factor. Everyone that I know that have owned them have loved them. They have also been on Car and Driver's best list basically since they came out.

The other perk to consider is that if the vehicle is new and they offer any kind of free maintenance (oil changes, etc) it will be nice to have the dealer right there rather than having to drive.

I agree 100% and I'm a Subaru lover as well.

Me 3 for this.

We had a Subaru Outback at one point (traded it in 8 years ago, but had it for 9 years) and we've had a Mazda3 for almost 2 years now. LOVE the Mazda, it handles great, gets amazing MPG (when I'm commuting it's in the 40-45mpg range) and is fun to drive. They have great ratings for low maintenance costs (ours is only 2 years old so we've only done oil changes and tire rotation so far). The back seat on the Mazda is surprisingly spacious and comfy for a small car also if she'll have passengers.

Thanks guys! I was pushing her towards the Mazda but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. The lower cost of maintenance is big to me, she will retire in a few years and she doesn't need higher maintenance bills.
