Carseat for Grandma

DD is 30 months, 36 inches and 30 lbs. In my car, she is RF in an Advocate Clicktight.

I need to get a seat for her for her grandmothers 2005 Toyota Sienna. It does not have side curtain airbags or autoretractors. Grandmother does not like Clicktight and does not want to use a locking clip. She would prefer a light weight seat.

Ideas? The seat will be used once or twice a month, so I'd prefer not to spend $300+, but can if needed.

Are the seat belts broken? Can she use LATCH? Personally, I'd go with a Scenera NEXT for its light weight and simplicity but it sounds like there are other issues here that make it less suitable for you. Maybe a Chicco Nextfit would be a good option, it's easy to use but not really lightweight.

Other than the fact that it'll be outgrown in 4 inches, a SN would be my first choice, too.

If you'd rather something that will last longer, then a Sureride.

"Beginning in 1996, all passenger vehicle seatbelts are required to lock pre-crash. This means that seat belts have a locking mechanism in the retractor or in the latch plate."

She shouldn't have to use a locking clip. Just pull the seatbelt all the way out then when you gradually release it, you will have switched your belt from emergency locking mode to automatic locking mode. My mom's 07 Sienna has switchable retractors as well as my 05 Camry and 1995 Odyssey.

Update:

So she has a Dodge Caravan...oops.

She has locking latch plates but they slip.

She requested a TFP, because she's confident she can install it. I wouldn't call that a light seat, but if it's what she wants...

I bought a TFP from Albee Baby for $99. It has a 2013 DOM, but we are moving cross country in 2 years, so it fits my needs. It will also be easy for her to adjust the harness for other younger grandkids.

I really liked my TFP for the brief time I had it. Gave it to my MIL to use for her other grandkids and for mine when we visisted but unfortunately someone crashed into her so we had to throw it away. Thank God she was alright. I didn't even pursue her insurance company in replacing it. Glad you got a seat she will like. :)

Not sure if it matters to you at this point, but if you didn't know, the Baby Trend PROtect is basically the same as the TrueFit, but with a higher RF weight limit.

That's pretty cool! I suspect the 35lbs weight limit of the $99 TFP will get her to 3 years RF. It looks like I'd have to go up to the $200 model PROtect to get lock-offs; I'm not sure if it's worth the price difference for 5lbs in my case. It probably is a better deal though for someone who needed the full lifetime of the seat before expiration.
