Question Can I use a pre-2012 Peg Perego Primo Viaggio infant car seat (expires 2018)?

We're pregnant with our first and someone's offered us a Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 infant car seat that expires at the end of 2018. We'd like to use it, but now I'm reading that it may be illegal to use it (or is it just to gift it???) because it was made prior to 2012 (it was made in December 2011). A thread on BabyCentre.ca directed me here to ask a tech... any idea/advice?
