17 Awards given:
Honda/Acura 7
Hyundai/Kia 4
Subaru 3
Volvo 2
Chrysler 1
Honda and Subaru notably provide advanced safety feature options packages at reasonable prices on lower trim levels. A strong "Thank You" to manufacturers who do this. It not only makes safety affordable for families, but also greatly increases the chances of finding models with these safety features on a dealer's lot.
It's really shameful how few manufacturers were represented by having vehicles with top crash test results from both the IIHS and NHTSA, combined with superior rated frontal crash avoidance systems. On the plus side, the number of qualifiers did increase significantly for 2016.

When creating awards for "Safest" vehicles, many automotive media outlets pick and choose between models that perform well in the IIHS tests or the NHTSA tests, but not usually both. Most never consider the availability of advanced safety features or ease of fitting kids/carseats at all. So, our lists are much more exclusive and only include the safest of the safe with typical families in mind. Simply doing well in all the crash tests from both agencies is not an easy task, as evidenced by only 27 qualifiers, 10 winners and 7 honorable mentions.
