Question Car seat for traveling to India

Hi all,
I understand that this question might be a long shot, but has anyone been successful in using a car seat when traveling in India outside of major metropolitan areas? Car seats are not mandatory there and only rear shoulder seat belts are available in the newer cars. If you did end up using a car seat, what kind of seat did you use? Were you able to find the seat in India or brought your own from abroad?
If you have a recommendation for a cheap, narrow and lightweight car seat, please let me know about that as well.

In the meantime, I'm not at all familiar with India but might be able to help a bit.

Do cars typically have lap belts in back? If so, you can install car seats with those. If there are shoulder belts, they likely don't have a way to lock them like we do in the US, so a seat with a built-in lock-off might be a good idea.

Here's a list of recommended seats for travel (typically light and thin) http://carseatblog.com/25408/recommended-carseats-for-airplane-travel/ Most of those seats don't have lock-offs, though. In that case, you can use a locking clip, which will usually come with the seat. You'll want to get familiar with using one, but they're pretty easy once you get the hang of them.
