CDC harness recommendations

Is new recommendation to stay harnessed until 5 from a new study? I have always heard 4 and 40 lbs as the minimum and that keeping in a harness longer was a maturity issue and normally not a good idea until 5 or 6, but just due to maturity. Was there a study that proved harnessing is actually better at preventing injuries?

We don't know what they have done. A few studies have decided 5 is the line after which boosters protect well but they were small. There are developmental studies that might impact the recommendation not directly related to this field. They may have research they haven't quite gotten ready for publication yet. Or they may simply be following up on what organizations have been saying for years which is "We know that kids really shouldn't move to a booster until school-age but we can't make a universal recommendation until seats are universally available to safely fit those kids." With seats with tall slots and 65 lb limits available under $100 maybe they feel that time has come.
