Question Incognito or nothing (Canada)

If your 10,5 yo son was outgrowing all canadian boosters but was not 5-stepping, would you use an incognito????
Is it considered a car seat by Transport Canada? If yes, Am I right that I can legally bring one in Canada but I can't use it???

No, it is not legal to bring one to Canada. Both importing and using a seat not certified to Canadian standards, is illegal

Under Health Canada’s Restraint Systems and Booster Seats for Motor Vehicles Regulations, and in accordance with the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, child, infant, and booster seats that do not comply with certain specifications of Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seat Safety Regulations (RSSR) must not be imported, advertised or sold in Canada whether by individuals or for commercial purposes. Furthermore, provincial and territorial legislation does not allow their use in Canada. Their laws are enforced on roadways by provincial and territorial police.

The shoulder belt is too close to the edge of his shoulder.
The only booster that works right now is the low portion of an Harmony Dreamtime. But he is really close to outgrow it.
I have tried the 5-stepping test 2 months ago and he really didn't pass it but I don't remember why. I will try tomorrow.
Thanks for your answer!

Thanks Technogranola
So, it's really sad for our 10-12 yo who are in the fence between a booster and nothing.
I will continue with a booster until the fit is worst with a booster than without.

The Incognito is coming really soon. Hold on...maybe he can last in the Dreamtime until it gets here.

Or, have you tried a Cosco Top Side? It routes the shoulder belt OVER the arm rest (weird, I know) and also is quite low profile. It might work...bonus, it's on sale at Best Buy right now.

I would keep checking if he 5-steps and cross your fingers that the dreamtime works until then or until the incognito arrives here.

Once we exhausted all booster options for DD, she was thankfully 5-stepping (she was 10 at the time). There were a few boosters where the belt was majorly off her shoulder when others still fit ok. The olli is what lasted us the longest (which surprised me since it sits a bit higher on the seat than some of the other boosters that we tried).

I feel for you. At about 59" tall, we have the same problem with the shoulder belt being too far out on the shoulder in most LBBS, while the lap belt is on the tummy without a booster. Luckily, we're in the US and have the incognito, but if not, our solution would be a tall HBB. HTH.

The olli is what lasted us the longest (which surprised me since it sits a bit higher on the seat than some of the other boosters that we tried).

I would have liked one of those, but we'd been told to avoid it because it was too tall. :( Is the height limit only 57"? :( Is it too late for us to try it?

Pixelated: is it new info about the incognito arriving really soon? I m waiting for it since... i think 2 years!

Yes, you are right jacqui276 that sometimes the booster that are higher provide a better fit for the shoulder belt. For example, the dreamtime is still acceptable but the harmony youth booster is no longer an option for us. I like your suggestion for the Olli. I will try it!

I still don't understand. Would anyone explain, please? Although I'm thankful to have the option of the incognito, I'd love to have more options than the incognito. Thanks!

OP, I hope you find something that works for you. If nothing else works, do you have tall HBBs in Canada, like the boost air. Or maybe he's not that tall and the PKWY would work. I don't think you said his height, so it's difficult for me to advise not knowing that.

Or it might be that even though it's higher, it's centered in the seat differently, so that the child is more to the side and the belt is on the shoulder. Our Olli definitely didn't help in our cars, the LATCH was set more towards the buckle, making the shoulder even further in from the shoulderbelt. It can be very vehicle-seat-dependent, so it looks like what shouldn't work, does work!

IMO, if it's legal for someone to use one of those seat comfort cushions from Canadian Tire, then it's legal to use the Incognito. I'm in BC and there are no laws about what someone over the age of 9 can put under their butts. The only stipulation in the motor vehicle act is that the seatbelt be securely fastened and properly adjusted. I have an Incognito for my 9yo.

Except that it's a children's booster seat and it's illegal to import anything marketed as a booster seat if it doesn't meet Canadian standards. I would hazard a guess though that it's more likely to get stopped at customs than for a police officer to worry about using it with a kid that is beyond the ages of the law which child restraints are required.

Yes, good point, don't try to get one mailed to you! I took the tags off mine and drove across.
