School trip and seats

My 5 year old DS's class had a trip, where parents drove them. We brought a Radian for him - ;) I'm a car seat freak, right? Turns out, his teacher had brought a few seats and boosters. The parents driving all had at least 3 seats due to their own kids. Some may have been expired, but I was impressed that the teacher made sure to supply seats. The next trip is in middle of the year, on a school bus.

I always wonder in these cases if the parents realize that in most (all?) provinces the legal obligation to ensure children are properly restrained is on the driver, regardless of who has provided the seats.

We had a 5 YO take a trip last year in parents' cars.
The first trip I drove and he was in a harness. And I had 5 other carseats in the car, and I harnessed most of the other kids. They said, oh, I had that seat when I was a baby, lol. We had a Frontier and a Secure Kid, etc. I don't think they would have fit in the Radian. Well, one kid was really small. He probably would have.

But the 2nd trip I had a newborn so could not volunteer, and he went in a parent's car. I gave him a Harmony highback. No way someone else could install a seat for him (I mean, they could, but who knows if they'd do it correctly). The Harmony was pretty easy. I would have given a backless since he'd have to take it on the bus, but I ended up driving him that day so we brought it that way.

:yeahthatlove: We installed the seat. I don't trust others with that job either!

It blows my mind that schools allow parents to drive kids for field trips. That just seems like a liability nightmare to me

Awesome that the teacher had extra seats for kids though!!

IIRC, OP is in Canada. There is far less litigation here and people/govt generally don't worry as much about liability.

In some areas, there is little busing, so the only option is for parent drivers.

This trip was for only one class, so getting a bus was not an option. (20 kids)

Also, most people are not car seat savvy. I had a friend with her almost 2 year old, and put her in a RF seat. She couldn't underatand why I RF my kids that long, and she would not remove her daughter's puffy snowsuit, even though I asked. I couldn't fight her, and she was with me, so I had who to blame if something happened. She never removes her kids coats in their car.
