Chevrolet Venture

We've been considering getting a van because it would be really nice to have the option of taking passengers sometimes. Vans are generally way out of our price range but a friend just offered to sell us their 2004 Chevy Venture for a very good price. I was pretty excited until I searched on here and noticed some negative reviews in regard to crash safety. I did look up the reports and they are pretty vague and somewhat contradictory so, I am wondering, how truly unsafe is a Venture? Is it really something that should be avoided?

Any insights? I'm also wondering about how to eliminate projectiles in a van when traveling, etc. Are there any reliable devices, either OEM or after market, that would effectively work as a cargo net or something similar?

I would really recommend steering clear of them, if you have any other viable options. Their safety ratings are pretty darn bad. I used to have one, and was nervous the whole time I owned it. What really stood out for me was a phrase from the old Informed For Life website..."cockpit intrusion left little room for occupant survival". That sealed the deal for me, and I got rid if it as soon as I could.

I have to say, it was great for installing car seats though! (I had the three bucket seats in the second row)
