Five Year Old - Not Yet 40 Pounds - BUT.....

Hi there,

My just turned five year old is really wanting to be using a seat belt (and we are too for a little ease with our three boys). He is 38.2 pounds and 41 inches tall. We live in Prague, however, and have access to Group 3 high back boosters that start at 15 kilos. He would love to feel like a bigger kid, but I can certainly hold out until he's ready to be in booster mode in his Britax Frontier. Curious about any opinions out there...

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,
Jessica

I have asked the mods to move your post to the International forum so you can recommendations for Europe. You could also PM Adventuredad, he owns carseat.se, a Swedish company that sells car seats. He is very knowledgable about European car seats.

Belt loading occurs as low as 30 lbs so I'm not too concerned about that in boosters certified for it. The big issue is maturity. Some 5 year olds are booster ready and some aren't. Mine have started booster training around 5 1/2 as that was when they become ready. I'd probably get a booster but keep the harness. See how he does with staying in position 100% of the time he is in, working up to longer trips and when asleep. If he does well all the time he is ready. If he gets distracted or upset or tired and forgets the rules you have taught him, he isn't quite yet. Maturity and to some extent age are far more important markers than weight.

At age 5, assuming that he is within the limits of the seat (which if they start at 15kg, he is) and can sit properly so the seat belt stays positioned on him correctly throughout the car ride, he is safe in a booster seat. I agree with the other poster, that I would hold onto the harnessed seat for now too just in case he struggles with sitting correctly and gets wiggly in his new seat.
