travel to Asia with 4 mon old - get a car seat just for the trip?

Due to family illness, I'll be flying solo to Korea with a 4 month old and a 7 year old. The 4 month old will be flying as a lap infant, so I won't be able to bring the baby's SR35 on board.

What's your take on gate-checking the SR35? I could buy a SR22 (or 35) just for travel, but is that overkill?

FWIW, I'm aware of the risks of flying as a lap infant vs buying a seat for the baby.

Thanks!

I would bring and gate check your current infant seat and buy the baby a new convertible when you return home. If the flight isn't full, you might be able to use the seat on board.

If you cant bring the car seat on board instead of buying an infant seat I would just buy a Scenera Next. Cheaper and lighter, and since you wont be needing the travel feature of the handle on the infant seat I see it as a better deal since it would last longer. Just check it for damage after gate checking it.

I think it depends on how long you are going to be there and if you plan to use the SR35 after returning home (for this baby or another possible future baby.)

If you will be there a while and and want the convenience of an infant seat while there, and can switch to a convertible once home, bring the current SR35 infant seat.

If it's a short trip and you want to keep using the SR35 at home in the future, "save" it at home and buy a scenera next or deeply discounted SR22 just for the trip and consider it "disposable". You could even abandon it in Korea

If you think you might want to use the convenience of the infant seat on the trip i would buy a cosco comfy carry. I think their the cheapest infant carrier on the market.

Are there locking seatbelts in S. Korea? I don't think locking seatbelts are available, but I could be wrong on that. If no locking belts, I would bring the SR35 because of the lockoffs on the base. Just buy a new seat when you get back home, it is WAY chapter than a plane ticket to Asia :).

LATCH is also likely unavailable, so be sure to know how to use a locking clip if you bring a seat without lockoffs.

I traveled a ton with my SR35...it was great.

I'd bring a cheap convertible and leave it there for future use since you gave family there.

On all transatlantic flights I've been on there's always been a pre-boarding announcement that anyone not having a ticketed infant needs to check the car seat. But I almost always fly delta/Alitalia so maybe it's a company/alliance thing. I think they do anything necessary (including switching planes and bumping people) to try to get them as full as possible. So there are never empty seats.

Thanks for the responses. I should have clarified that it's only a 12 day trip, and also that a convertible car seat isn't an option because the infant car seat is one of the baby's preferred places to sleep. In fact, he's napping in the car seat in the bedroom right now.

The idea of waking a sleeping baby to remove them from a car seat gives me the shivers, which is why I got a Snugride 35. I am truly impressed by those of you who dared and succeeded in using a convertible car seat with your 4 month old!

I do have a Radian 65 that expires this fall, but it's heavy and a pain to install RF in a Hyundai Sonata. So I think we'll get a Snugride 22, $60 at Target right now with the Redcard 5% off discount. Not planning to bring the base.
