Britax Roundabout 50 - Side impact?

So tell me I'm crazy please. I got a Foonf, which I'm now returning because my son HATES it. With a passion. Anyhow, I ordered a Pria 70 to replace it....problem is that I already also have a Roundabout 50, which my son loves. He's seated in the center. The reason why I got the Pria was for the additional SIP. Now I know that all car seats pass the same tests, but really, is all the extra SIP necessary for middle seat installs? I'm planning on keeping him in the center, and as far as I know, a lot of the injuries are caused by contact with the door, correct? I know there really aren't any crash tests out there for us to clearly know, but I should just keep my RA 50 and return the Pria? It's not even opened yet, and I'm not going to until I make up my mind.

Oh I'm most likely going to FF him around 3, so about 11 more months...I'm probably switching to Frontier's as that time. I'm pretty sure I'm just overthinking all of this.

I'd use a RA in the middle without any hesitation. And be happy that the sides were lower for loading, to boot :)
Rearfacing is so so so so so so good for SIP, I'd really not worry, especially in the middle. I loved my old Marathon (same as the RA50)! :)

That's good to hear! I've heard quite often that RF provides a ton of SIP, but can you explain that. I'm assuming it's something to do with the physics of it all?

With almost all side impacts there is a forward component (like getting hit going through an intersection) so a RF kid gets thrown back into the seat and the head is contained within the headwings or car seat side walls. RF gives the seat the ability to protect the head. Also, if the seat swivels towards the side impact, it's the back of the seat taking more of the blow. A FF kid gets their head thrown forward out of the seat so a much bigger risk of a head injury.

Yeah, most side crashes have the element of driving forward, say, through an intersection when you get T-boned... so see how this crash shows the body cradled in the shell? Child Seat Crash Test | Britax Advocate | Rear Facing, Side Impact Test | 3 yr - YouTube That's even without forward motion, which would keep the child even more deeply cradled in the seat.

We have an Advocate in our middle of the van. :) It just happened that's the seat that works there right now.

And actually I figure the soft side wings provide some extra safety for the kids sitting next to it. Instead of just a metal bar or something.

Ahh okay that makes total sense. Thanks for explaining that. It seems like it just makes more sense to worry about decent headwinds when he's forward facing.
