Training sales people?

I was just in Buy Buy Baby and because I love car seats, I was wandering through that section. I heard 2 different sales people telling 2 different expectant parents that they needed to buy an infant car seat to fit newborns, but most babies outgrow those seats by 8-10 months and then the babies move to forward facing seats and although that ideally they should keep babies rear facing until they are 12 months old so if their baby is average size or larger, they should buy a convertible seat at that point.

It's really too bad that the sales people are not giving appropriate advice. It seems like explaining the 2 years rear facing recommendation & benefits of rear facing even longer could help increase money spent on car seats might be beneficial for stores and therefore, cost effective to train the employees to recommend safer practices & purchases... Right?

Yikes -- I don't think you'd be out of line emailing Buy Buy Baby and telling them what their salespeople are saying! I don't even think it's legal for an 8 month old baby to face forward, is it? Even if it is legal, it's so dangerous!

Which location was this?

I'd be marching over to the manager with the recommendations by the AAP and NHTSA, letting them know they are setting themselves up for a lawsuit!

I'd suggest emailing the store and providing link to the AAP policy and letting them know what what the associates are recommending is highly unsafe and illegal (also provide links to your state law). I would say the problem is likely that the sales people have had NO training on car seats, and have such a high turnover that it would seem pointless to do an in depth training session on car seats. I would ask that the associates just keep it simple with recommending that the children rear face until 2 because its safer. Maybe Jooles can say what Babies R Us does in regard to training staff on car seats, but that might be different because they have her on staff and shes a CPST.

Yikes. BRU has official training that RF is till 2 now, but come to think of it, it's been a couple years since they gave me that little 'in store guide' for me to learn from, and I don't know if any of my salespeers (I made up that word, lol, does it make sense?) read it much , since the employee cars are the worst in the lot, no matter how much I try to educate them.
Anyway, it can't hurt to politely bring it up to management that you are concerned they aren't following commonly accepted guidelines. The law is still 1 for ff in most states, and the labeling on 99.999999% of seats is 1 FF, so they should at least be emphasizing that. (When I first stared BRU, their internal education said turn them ff when their feet touch the seatback. So, my 4 month old in her Chaperone? Ugh).
Does the BBB website say anything on their page? Sometimes there's an education guide in sales stores like that, if it's got best practice on it, that's ammo for the manager.
