2015 Odyssey vs Grand Caravan/T&C for safety?

Hi,

Can anyone comment on the safety differences between the 2015 Odyssey and the Grand Caravan or Town and Country (I think these two are about the same)? Have always had an Odyssey but wondering how much of a safety difference there is (since going with the Caravan or T&C would save some money). Safety is most important of course, just want to make sure getting another Odyssey because of safety makes sense. Does which model we choose make a difference in terms of comparing the two?

Thanks!

There really is no comparison between the Odyssey and the Town & Country/Grand Caravan. As far as crash test safety, the Odyssey wins significantly. You can look up crash test results and info on the IIHS site. As far as family/car seat friendliness the Odyssey is infinitely better than the T&C/GC. Odyssey has 6 tether anchors and 5 sets of lower anchors. The T&C/GC has 3 of both. Also the shoulder belt geometry in the 3rd row outboard seats of the T&C/GC is pretty horrendous and provides a very poor fit on kids in backless boosters and teens that gave graduated out of boosters.

The Odyssey is very car seat/family friendly. At a lower price point, the new 2015 Kia Sedona looks VERY promising and has stepped up its game.

Here is a little peek at the Sedona from the Chicago Auto Show last week: http://carseatblog.com/32281/2016-chicago-auto-show-whats-new/

The Odyssey performed better in various crash tests, notably the IIHS small offset crash test and both NHTSA frontal crash tests. It also has a front crash prevention warning on higher trims, along with more LATCH/tether seating positions.

The 2015 Sedona is still somewhat less expensive for the LX trim that compares to the Odyssey EX and Sienna LE, but the 8-passenger 2nd row bench is in an optional package on that trim level so might be harder to find. Higher trims are closer to Odyssey/Sienna pricing, sometimes actually more, depending on the features you want. It's not the bargain it used to be, but it is a lot nicer than before!

I'm am not sure that the 2015 Sedona does well in the small overlap crash test. I heard something that they were going to make changes to it for next year.

Yup the crash test scores are all Good or 5-star for 2015, so the Sedona did well all around. It didn't get a "Top Safety Pick+" award only because the IIHS now requires an active autobrake front crash mitigation system for that. Like the Odyssey, the Sedona only has a warning system so it only qualifies for "Top Safety Pick" for 2015.
