Advice for a friend

My friend is really taking to heart all I have been saying about keeping kids harnessed as long as possible and wants to harness her son for another 2 years. He is currently in a Graco Cargo. He is about to outgrow it by weight. He will need a new seat. She is kinda hard up for money right now but I was thinking something like the Apex if she has the head rests might be a good choice for her.

What do you all think and what other options should I look at?

How far are his shoulders from the top slots of the seat he's in now? He's got lots of time weight-wise in the apex, but height is just as important. The Apex won't be a good buy if he's just a smidge under the slots, ya know? But if he's got an inch or two, it will be well worth it. I'm pretty sure the cargo and Apex have roughly the same slot height, maybe a little more room in the apex?

I think the Apex would be a good choice if he is just outgrowing the cargo seat by weight and still has some growing room (provided there are headrests in that car). It is a good inexpensive seat that will give him the weight limit that he might. See if you can find a store that carries this seat (I haven't found any yet locally) and have her try her son out in the seat.

Hmmm.. not sure. I will have to go over and check it out. I need to either get him in a new seat ASAP or switch him to the BPB. She says he is only 39 lbs cuase that is what he was 6 weeks ago at the Ped. I think he is over 40. I will check on the harness height and stuff if I can see her today.

What other seats should I be considering?

How old is he?

In terms of inexpensive higher harness seats, the evenflo triumph advance and the cosco apex are the main ones that come to mind.

If it is a truely tall child though, the britax marathon would be the main recommendation as it has the high weight and height limits. It isn't cheap though so it isn't an option for everyone.

Find out where he fits height wise on the cargo and that should give us an idea of what seats he might still fit into.
