nhtsa side impact testing?

I saw stories about this a year ago, but nothing recently. Does anyone know if they are moving ahead with developing a side impact test to be required for all U.S. carseats? Any word on how long before it would take effect?

I think they are in the final stages of what the standard will be, but it will not be required on all seats for another 2-3 years. These things move slowly, but it is hard to wait for something that will make our kids safer, isn't it?

It feels like molasses! It's so hard to try to gauge the relative value of various features on current models without having some across the board, objective test to compare them all with-- it feels like we're playing a guessing game with our kids' safety.

With so many manufacturers claiming that their seats pass internal side impact testing, it will be interesting to see which, if any, move to meet the new requirements before it's actually required. Do you know if high back boosters will be included as well?

When I was looking for seats I asked the carseat companies if their seat would pass the upcoming test. I know the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 and 85 (maybe the safety 1st advanced air, I can't remember now) have taken the test unofficially and the Peg Perego said their convertible would pass too.

What I heard on the Graco webinar just talked about a 12 month and 3 yr old I think, dummies, so it didn't seem like boosters were involved, but I do not know for sure.
