passenger vans and headrests

With baby #7 coming it is time for us to get a bigger van. We would really like a Nissan NV or Ford Transit but they are out of our price range. I think we are going to have to get a regular passenger van and see if we can retrofit headrests. I found this thread http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?p=2641023#post2641023 for how to add them, but I was wondering if there were any specific models or years we should look at to make it easier to add them. I would like shoulder belts in every position, but only 2 of our kids are too tall for hbb so we could probably start with just 2 headrests and add more as the other kids get taller. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi :) That was me. I know for sure it'll work with any Chevy Express. I've never pulled the cover off an Econoline bench, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. All you need is a metal bar along the top of the seatback, which is sort of a given ;)

For stability control you're looking at 04+ Chevy (I *think*), but you'll need to go to 08 for all shoulder belts. 08+ Ford has stability control & all shoulder belts. Chevy has a longer wheel base. Ford has more tether anchors and their seatbelts work better with car seats.

Thanks! So you think the ones with all shoulder belts will work? I thought I heard somewhere that it wouldn't work as well (or maybe you couldn't put one in the middle, but I guess that would be ok).

You probably remember Chex's dilemma. She didn't want to put holes in her top bar because the middle shoulder belt was anchored to it. However my retrofit welds onto the top bar, so no structural compromises there. I haven't done it to my 3-shoulder-belt bench yet, unfortunately. But I don't think it'll be a problem.

That's probably what it was. My husband thinks he can figure out the instructions, so unless we somehow find an NV we can afford we will start looking for a decent Ford or Chevy. Thank you!!
