1992 Cadillac Brougham

BF wants to buy this car. Looking at pictures online it looks like in the back it has 2 shoulder belts outboard and a lap belt center. Has anyone had one? We have three kids to put in back hopefully. Two would be in boosters and is have to find a harness for the center. Anything else I should think about. I'm nervous about getting something so old.

He loves it and is pretty set on getting it. I think it is super ugly. A friend of his that is a mechanic is selling it so it has at least been kept up well. The kids won't be in it much. The seatbelts have actually already been replaced by the current owner. That was the first thing I asked.

So we got it this week. Looks to be in decent condition. The seat belts have not been replaced as I was told. I called the dealership and they are discontinued. So now I can deal with the ones it has, or get aftermarket ones. Not sure what I want to do. It will just be his commuter car, so I will probably just trade anytime he needs to transport kids. It does have a top tether for the back middle seat so I was impressed by that. It actually had a long section in the manual about child seats and how to correctly position the seatbelt on adults.

As much as I'd say replacing the belts would be a good idea regardless of who rides in it...

I'll admit I had a 1979 Pontiac Grand LeMans until DD was about three years old (2009) and never thought to replace the belts. At that point it was my "summer" car and when she was FF she was FF in the front passenger seat, tethered to the rear seat seatbelt behind.

It would probably make most sense to just switch cars if he needs to transport the kids, or if all five of you go somewhere together.

How old/big are the kids? If he needs to transport the kids only (without you, just four people) and for whatever reason (emergency?) he can't take your car could he have each child in a booster with a lap and shoulder belt, in the two rear outboard seats and the front passenger seat? You should check to be sure but I'm almost positive the car wouldn't have a passenger airbag. HBB in the back seat at least as the wouldn't have headrests.

Edit: Even my 1979 had a long section on child seats. It mentioned locations to drill anchors, as well as the safest location for a child to stand if there were more people than seat belts! Thankfully times have changed. ;)

My DS is 6.5 YO and is mostly in an HBB. His kids are 5 and 7 and are only with us every other weekend. I have his son who is 5 in a Frontier 90, which I could put in the middle lap belt. The 7 YO is also in a HBB. All three would fit in the back without an issue. It has a huge backseat.

Yes that's part of why we like our huge sedans! :) We now have a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, awesome car, just like my old Pontiac, you can fit three of anything across the back. DH also drove a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer for years (until 2010-2011 maybe), you could fit three of anything across the back, and you could have fit three of anything across the front as well.
