emergency air plane travel

We recently had a death in the family (yesterday) and have to fly home tomorrow. Because of time constraints and a couple thousand dollars in plane tickets, we have decided to do lap child with our 6 month old. I know that it is not the safest option, but right now we don't have a choice. What I need to know is how do I go about bringing his infant seat. There is no way that I am checking his Marathon, but I do have a Snugride that he still fits very well in (I just prefer him in the Marathon because he looks more comfortable). So do I check it with our luggage, gate check it, or bring it on the plane just in case they have an extra seat that we can use? Any help would be appreciated. This is our first child, so first time traveling with one.

I would definitely take it with you and try to take it on the plane.

I'm sorry for your loss. Good luck.

Bring it up to the gate. Ask the gate personnel (not sure what their real title is) if there are any open seats. They can put a note there that if there is a seat, you would like to take it (no guarantee of it though). When you are almost ready to board, ask them if they are sold out or if there are seats available. If there are still seats, ask if they can move people around to give you that seat. At that time, you can know whether to put the gate check tag on your carseat.

I am very sorry to hear about the death in your family. I hope your trip goes smoothly.

Thanks for your well wishes and advice. I will try and bring it to the gate and see what they say. As of right now it does not appear to be a totally full flight.

Sorry for your loss.

I agree, I would bring it with you to the gate. If you haven't already booked, try to book an isle and a window seat (unless you are booking 3). I was told that seats that are singles in the middle book last, and you have a better chance of getting an empty seat for your infant. We did this when my DS was little. There were 6 of us total(including kids) and we booked 5 seats. 3 in 1 row, and 2 in next row, window and isle. The middle seat was always empty on all 5 planes we were on.

Even if you have to check it, checking it at the gate will ensure that it is handled less, and it will be there for you when you arrive at your destination. DO NOT check it with your luggage. You'll have no idea what kind of stress it was under, and it can get tossed around and broken.
You might have already flown by now, I just check the date. If so, how did it go?

Thanks for the info. I will take it with me to the gate and see how things go. Hopefully we can take it with us for him to sit in, but if that doesn't work at least it will be with us and handled less. Thanks again you guys!

It may be too late but when my Dad was going to pass (he hadn't yet) the airlines gave me a discount since I had to fly in the next couple days. Make sure to double check with the airlines and see if they have special prices for you.

So sorry for your loss.
