Safe Ride News is so $$$ - Any way around that?

I am so excited to be take the certification course in December. I have been looking into subscribing to Safe Ride News, but it is soooo expensive. What do techs do who don't have employers to pay for it? I don't want to make money being a tech, but I don't want to pay hundreds every year either! On the other hand, I want to be highly informed and current in my knowledge.

I have done a few private installs that ended with a nice donation tip. I use that money to pay for my continuing education, supplies, and subscriptions.

Since I have problems thinking of Christmas gifts for myself, it's always on my list. For $125, you can have a subscription to SafetyBeltSafe USA's tech access, their printable recall list, their newsletter, the super cool CD with all the manufacturers' instructions (and a summary of each instruction at the front of the manual), instructions updates AND the Safe Ride News newsletter.

I'm pretty sure that you can deduct the cost of the subscription from your taxes. You might even be able to deduct the cost of the course itself, but I'm not sure. I'd consult a tax attorney and ask them about it. I do know that you can deduct the cost of dues, fees, journal subscriptions, conventions, etc. that are related to your business. I'm thinking that the CPST stuff might fall into those rules.

Used to be required to be a member when you were a tech...kind of spendy for that, though! www.saferidenews.com they have all the stuff Heather listed, plus they publish the LATCH manual. I used to love getting my newsletter every two months...but I couldn't afford it last year... :(

One of my instructors was sending the info on to us via email -- now I'm getting it as part of the SafetyBeltSafe membership with grant $ for the low income seat distribution program I coordinate through our Child Development & Day Care Council....

I wonder..... just wondering... just thinking aloud... there's an awful lot of us 'here'...if we qualify as a group, maybe Darren can swing us some kind of group rate? It'll still be spendy, but a few bucks off would help most of us, and they'd sell more memberships than normal....and a lot more of us would be privy to the newest information available, which is always a good thing
