Kids in stinky sports. What kind of vehicle??

Okay, so far I've been fine with my 10 & 12yos and their stinky gear in my van. My van is big and they don't smell too bad... yet... But I need a new vehicle at some point. It seems like everyone at hockey drives either a Sienna or a crossover or SUV of some sort. But I don't want something quite that big.

I was looking at the Rondo & Mazda5 for their bonus row of seats (yeah, I know you can't have cargo & people at the same time, that's fine, I have my 15p too ;) ). Then I was looking at the Elantra Touring for the small size & fuel economy.

But do I really want to share my "passenger air" with a hockey bag? For 4+ hours driving home from a tournament?

But a sedan that has enough trunk space for a hockey bag or two plus a playpen isn't going to be small or fuel efficient. I mean, if I'm going to drive an Impala, I might as well just get a Sienna. It's got about the same footprint.

Opinions from other stinky-sports-families? ;)

Once they hit about 13yo, it doesn't matter what you drive. You can't escape the stink.

Once they really start to get stinky the only way to avoid it is a container on the luggage rack! We don't have hockey equipment, but Ds1 (13) and Ds2 (11) both play soccer and basketball and Ds1 plays volleyball. I noticed the smell toward the end of last volleyball season in June and now that fall soccer had started is worse! Teenagers just have smelly sports equipment!

I second the roof box idea. DH plays hockey and uses our roof box for his equipment, and then it goes straight into the shed for air drying. A few times he's left it in the house or in the car overnight, and oh yuck. Grown man possibly stinkier than teen boys?

We have these deodorizer things that you drop into the bag (I have a grown adult man and a small boy child playing and both have different stink at the moment ;) ). I'm extraordinarily smell sensitive (I HATE air freshened smells) and this is like an eliminator, sort of. I think ours are citrusy because I tolerate that smell better. We buy them at Total Hockey. I don't know the exact name (they have a little display next to the register. I'll look tomorrow if I can remember.

Two things to invest in...odor eliminator and a container that is air-tight. One on the roof would be ideal, but not as practical. One to two large tubs can hold pads, jersey, skates, socks, and short/pants they wear. Then seal it up with the odor eliminator and you should be ok. This would be applicable to any car you drive...but obviously a larger vehicle or one with more cargo room can fit plastic containers in the back.

Last year, not only did I have full grown man DH, but I also drove his teammate (18yo boy-man neighbor) and thought I would die from stench.
