AWD commuter car for DH?

DH currently drives a 2007 Civic...my car is a 2011 Outback.

Looking at replacing his car in the next year as we are moving to a snowier area and he'll have a long commute, so want to have AWD. Gas mileage will also be important, and obviously safety is paramount.

We have 2 kids (3 years and 3 months), and probably are done but small possibility of #3 in a few years.

Is the only choice for AWD sedan the Legacy? DH would really prefer a sedan but I wonder if we should look at small SUVs (CR-V, etc.) to have some more choices. Budget is flexible within reason..

The Legacy is hard to beat for the price, mpgs, and awd. We are seriously looking at a 2015 Legacy for hubby to commute with.

If you want to spend more the Ford Fusion comes in an AWD version as does the VW Passat TDI with 4motion.

The Legacy we are looking at (cloth interior with added EyeSight frontal crash mitigation) is right around $25,000. The AWD Fusion is around $40,000 and the 4motion TDI Passat is around $40,000+.

Is the only choice for AWD sedan the Legacy?

Almost all of the luxury brands have an AWD sedan option -- BMW xdrive, Mercedes E-series 4matic, Audi quattro, Lexus, Acura, Cadillac, etc.

Among non-luxury, the only other ones that I can think of that haven't been mentioned, are the Chrysler 300 and Ford Taurus.

If an AWD sedan is what you're looking for, I agree with the PP that the Subaru Legacy is probably the best overall bet. Affordable, fuel-efficient, top-notch AWD system and some available safety features like Eyesight in addition to top marks in IIHS crash testing.

If your budget permits (mine unfortunately does not!) you might also like the Volvo S60 or S80, both of which are available with AWD and excelled in IIHS testing. They are a little more stylish/luxurious than the Subaru but at the cost of some fuel economy and generally other costs of ownership.

An SUV would give you a little more flexibility for family outings and such, but since you already have an Outback, that doesn't sound like a major consideration. I could see where a sedan could be the most comfortable choice for a long commute.

Not a sedan, but the Nissan Rogue is a small crossover/hatchback that comes in an AWD. They just restyled it, it's very nice. Definitely can fit 2 in back easily, 3 across might be harder.
