Installing Radian/Pacifica in '06 Honda Civic without angle adjuster?

Hello! We just installed the new Diono Pacifica rear facing in the middle seat of our 2006 Civic. We had to use an angle adjuster otherwise the seat touches both the passenger and driver seat which is not allowed because of advanced airbags. My 11 month old is old enough for the AA but it makes the seat so upright and I'm concerned it will prevent him from sleeping while we drive. He screams and cries in the car so it's desperately needed!

Has anyone installed a Pacifica or Radian without needing an AA in a Honda Civic? Did it touch the front seats? Or would it work better if we got the R120 instead of Pacifica? Does the Radian take up less room than Pacifica?

Thanks!

I haven't used the Pacifica or any of the newer Diono seats, but this blog entry shows them taking up essentially the same front-to-back space as the Radian.

We used to have a 2006 Civic and had been using the Radian XTSL (older model, but similar to the 120). For us, the *only* way it would fit rear-facing was with the angle adjuster. Without the angle adjuster, it was not even close -- even outboard on the passenger side behind the shorter adult.

I know that other people here have had better luck with this and have been able to do a RF Radian in the Civic without the angle adjuster... perhaps one of them could chime in here.

One option to consider -- if it's possible in your case -- would be to install the carseat outboard on the driver's side. My understanding is that light touching against the back of the driver's seat is not as much of a concern in terms of airbag sensors, because the sensors do not need to determine whether the driver's seat is occupied (i.e., it is assumed to be occupied). That is my layman's understanding as a non-carseat tech and non-engineer; hopefully someone can provide more detail on that.

The other thing to consider is that some kids just scream like crazy whenever they are put in the carseat -- regardless of carseat brand or configuration -- they just don't like to be restrained or for some other reason. Are you seeing an absolute correlation between the new Radian and the crying?

Thanks for the response. We just spent a two hour car trip with intense crying and screaming in the new Pacifica. My LO often does cry in the car but will fall asleep if we drive during nap time. We had a dr appointment today that we planned around his naps so he could sleep in the car. It was torture hearing him cry the entire time. I can't say for sure it's due to the upright position of the carseat but I was hoping there is a way to try it without the angle adjuster. Sounds like that may not be possible in our civic.

I love how open the sides of the Pacifica are. Any other seats that may be a bit smaller and fit better but that don't feel closed in that we should consider? My LO is not a fan of the chicco nextfit either!
