How do you decide?

I have a 26 month old daughter who is still rear-facing a Marathon, and we are expecting baby number 2 in March. I just cannot decide whether I should keep one in the middle, or have it fair and even and have both outboard. And if I was to keep one in the middle, how do you choose which child? I would like to put one on each side, but then I feel like the best spot in the vehicle is being wasted...I just don't know! Any advice?

This is a tough decision, but keep in mind that they are both extremely safe in rf seats. In this situation, I would not feel bad about putting them both outboard. A friend of mine put her two side by side and the two year old decided to throw things at the newborn. So, they both went outboard. You may also find that two seats don't fit great side by side. If you do get them next to each other, the general rule of thumb is that the weaker child goes in the middle, which would be the newborn. Also, IMO, a tethered rf MA offers great protection and I would be comfy with it on the side.

HTH!

The first thing to do is experiment with installations--you might find that's it's not even an option in your car. You also need to see if your older daughter can sit next to the baby without bothering him, touching him, whatever.

If you do decide that the center seat works, the baby would do well there. An RF 2 year old in a tethered MA is VERY safe outboard. And it's convenient to have an outboard seat available if an adult needs to ride back there.

Alrighty, say that both seats install well beside each other, what about when my oldest goes forward facing? Is that much less safe outboard than rear-facing?

You generally want the most protected children in the outboard positions. The infant seat might have a slight edge, but it's pretty much equal between a rf MA and an infant seat. It's close enough that I would use which ever configuration is most convenient when they are both rf.
