car rental help

Okay, i'm off to vacation on a lovely little European island. Help me choose a rental car:

Hyundai Tuscan
Ford Escape
Nissan X-traill
Toyota RAV4- diesel

all will be 2013/2014 models. I need to get three people (no car seats) and lots (5-6) of suitcases in there. Will be doing lots of driving, any idea of which will get the best gas mileage? I have a RAV, so pretty sure we could fit everything in there (I have before), but the diesel is throwing me off (though I think it's awesome!). We also have the option of a Skoda Octavia, but I think we will need the 4wdr option.

Ah ha!
DH was there 2 years ago for a week with work. Says it was fab! Although, he recommends skipping the fermented shark  (and he's a VERY adventurous eater!)
I'd totally get the diesel RAV 4 :)

Yeah, i'm not a big fan of Hákarl, though I have eaten my fair share of it :).

I'm totally intrigued by the diesel RAV, so may rent it just for the novelty (and you get free GPS with that model... toyotas get lost easy?!). last time I was there we had a diesel hyuandai van, which was pretty awesome.

I did not do any driving on my one brief trip to Iceland, but everyone I know who has driven there has gotten lost at least once, so I would definitely view the free GPS as a big plus.

All of those vehicles are basically around the same size and cargo capacity, so if you're familiar with the RAV4 and think it will work well, I'd go with that.

I wouldn't worry about the diesel aspect since it is almost equally available as gasoline -- although, as you probably know, there are some long stretches of road without *any* service stations or facilities.
