Question Transporting children in jump seats

Can children under the age of 9 be transported in jump seats without using booster seats? Is it legal in Canada to have children in jump seats if they are under the age of 9 without booster seats? And, can booster seats be used on jump seats (the kind found in 2011 Ford Rangers) or must they be used in the front. Thanks in advance for answering the questions.

Hi there, and welcome :)

What province are you in?

Is the front seat occupied?

What are the age and weight of the kid or kids in question?

Boosters can not be used in side-facing jump seats.

Hi,

Welcome to the board! :) Just As Pixelated said above, whether it's legal will depend on which province you are in. If you have more information on the child's height and weight, as well as other pasengers (besides the driver) who need to ride in the pickup that would be helpful to know.

However sideways facing jump seats really aren't safe for anyone to ride in; the way crash forces work on our bodies (adult or child!), sideways collision forces are much deadlier than forward or rearward forces. The human body is really designed to bend and flex from front to back more than side to side. In a frontal collision, the most deadly, people riding in sideways facing seats are at a much greater risk of death or serious injury.

Here's a link to the owner's manual below;

http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/11ranog1e.pdf

In the grey box at the bottom of page 67 it says not to install a child car seat in the center/side facing jump seats as none are recommended for this position, and at the very top of page 68 (grey box) it warns that booster must only be installed in a seat with a lap shoulder combination seatbelt. At the bottom of page 73 it discusses that the rear center/side facing jump seats, as well as the front centre seat, are only equipped with lap belts, so those aren't suitable for booster use. Lap belts alone really aren't safe for anything except installing a car seat, and not for a child in a booster or someone in a seatbelt.

So depending on where you live it may be legal but unfortunately it won't be safe.
