leather seats v. upholstery with kids? is leather still a pro?

DH had his last vehicle for 6 years (RAV4 with leather) and other than wiping up occasional kid spills, he did no maintenance to it. It had no issues at all when he sold it. The leather on his steering wheel had wear marks from where he typically positions his hands though (but he does a ton of driving due to work and put over 250 thousand km on that thing in those 6 years).
