Hi! I know there are a couple families on here from Las Vegas and I am looking for some insight on the schools there. We are getting our house on the market here in Oregon and moving to Vegas in the next couple months. My husband and I lived in Vegas in 2001-2002 and are pretty familiar with the areas. We have also gone back many times since we moved away. When we lived their before we only had one child and she was not close to school aged so I never learned much about the school system there. But now we have three children...one 1st grader, one preschooler, and a 1 year old.
From what I have been reading people say that the Clark county school system is not so good. Is private school really the best way to go or is there still good schools in the area? How do you feel about your childs school(s)? Do you do private? Do you have any opinions or information on any certain private schools there? We will be living in Summerlin if that makes any difference. I have also heard Green Valley has the best public schools...is this true?
Also are there any CPST's in Vegas on here? What is the CPS community like there? Are there many check up events? Is there a large support system for us?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out and offer any opinions, information, or comments!!! I would really appricaite anything you have to offer!!

I don't know anything about the school system in Vegas (though I did attend a training with one of Clark County Public Schools' "big-wigs.").

I wanted to tell you that I am pretty sure car-seat.org member rlsadc is a CPST in Vegas. I think...

I don't live there, but my cousin and her 3 kids (4th on the way) do. Her kids don't go to public school and are in a private Catholic school- I can't think of the name off of the top of my head. That being said, after their oldest finishes elementary this year, they're moving because they're not happy with any middle/high schools. This could be my cousin being over protective or whatnot, hard telling.
I also have a friend with two kids in Vegas and her kids attend a Jewish preschool. I don't know if it goes higher than preschool though.
So, of the 2 people I know in Vegas, both of them have their kids in private schools. Hope that helps a tiny bit!

Sorry, no help on the schools, but I can tell you that Vegas has a very active CPS program with lots of support for techs. In fact, other programs around the country are envious of Vegas' program. You'll love it. :)

Summerlin has very good schools as does Green Valley. Since it's all one school district, it's more the neighborhood you move into than the district you live in, as you know.

Safe Kids has an active CPS program. Here's their web site: www.safekidsclarkcounty.org .

My sister is a TA in Clark county: she likes it a lot ... but she also thinks it's a total waste of my time to research carseats/safety -- to the point of arguing vehemently with me about not caring what this crap says, she was fine without a seatbelt so it's fine for her 3 year old to use a very loose lap only belt & lay down to sleep if she wants (the same kid she's sooooo worried about due to Diabetes yet downright refuses to understand her kid is more likely to die in the car on the way to school :() so take her opinion with a big ol' grain o' salt :whistle:

Thank you very much for all the information!! I have been researching like a mad women because in all honesty if I have to pay for 3 children to go to private school that really is going to affect how much we spend on a house. I think it will be best to start my daughter out in a public school and then if it is not good then look into the private route. So now on to finding the neighborhoods that will put my kids in those good schools... I really do believe that parents play a greater role in their childs education then their school does so we'll probably be fine.

Melissa~Thank you!! I am excited because as much as I love where we live I hate the rain with a passion and life was so much nicer when we lived in the sun!

Agreed: my ex was in the worst NYC school during the 1970s but was an excellent student despite English not being his family's primary language because both his parents were very involved in his education  Then there are the very bright/capable students with absolutely no involvement from their parents & who do poorly in superb schools
