Backless booster

What is the appeal of the backless booster and how safe are they compared to the full back version? I'm looking for a booster seat (though am trying to find a 5pt harness one) and was discussing with a friend and wanted to know what the pros and cons of each were.

Backless boosters are good for older kids who still need a "boost" to get the lap portion of the seat belt riding low on their hips/thighs, and the shoulder portion properly positioned on their collarbone, but who are too tall for the headrest on a high-back booster. A lot of kids who are too tall to fit in a high-back booster (HBB) still need the "lift" provided by a backless booster, depending on the vehicle. My nine-year-old son still needs a booster for the lap-belt, but the shoulder-belt position is the same for him with or without the back:

Backless boosters are also easier to transfer from one vehicle to another.

Other than that, the HBB provides more side-impact protection, and the shoulder-belt-guides work better than backless. They also tend to keep kids from moving out of position and kids are less likely to put an irritating shoulder belt behind them or under their arm.

Thanks! How would I go about doing that? :D I've already passed them along for other tech's sites as well, but not for the CPSafety one I don't think.
