IMO I think the harness law should be 6yrs not 4. I don't believe the majority of kids 4/5 or even 6 are mature enough for a booster.

So sad that 66.67% feel the government is overreaching. Somewhere along the line people have decided that laws, rule & regulations shouldn't apply to them, it's the whole "My life/kid, my rules" and no one has the right to tell me what to do with myself or my kids.

I don't think any of the states specifically say that a child must be harnessed to 6. Some kids are okay at 4, Some aren't until 8.

At least they are trying to make improvements.

The law would state harnessed to 4, harness or booster to 8. I'm ok with that.

What I would like to see if booster to 10-12 or 4'9". I actually think that will protect more kids than redefining the lower ages. At least the lower ages are usually in some sort of seat, therefore having some protection. Once most kids hit age 8, they aren't protected at all and are at risk for a lot of injuries if in a crash.

Interesting! According to that link, the current law is something (harness or booster) until 8 or 80 pounds. The new law would specify RF until age 2 or 30 pounds, harnessed until age 4 or 40 pounds, and then harnessed or boostered until age 8 or 57 inches.

Would this be the first state to legislate longer RF?

I think it's great. This particular radio station and its listeners tend to be more toward the keep the government out of my life point of view no matter what the issue. The host who posted this is the overnight guy, so if he talked about it, I don't know how the callers responded and what he thought about it as I rarely listen to him. I'll have to see if the daytime hosts talk about it today while I'm in the car, and see what the callers are saying.

Ha Nj101.5??? I do like them and I agree with govt getting out of our lives as a whole but I do believe children should be protected from the stupidity of their parents if they can not seem to participate in the basic safety issues.

New Jersey going for stricter car seat laws.

I just heard briefly on the radio that NJ legislators are going for stricter more defined car seat laws. I only caught it real fast and a quick qoogle search didn't come up with anything, but what I did hear is if it passes all kids under 2 years and 30lbs would have to be in a RF seat, all kids 4 years and younger or kids under 40lbs would be required to be in a harnessed seat, and kids under 57" and 8 years would need to be in boosters. I believe that's what they said, but again I only heard it quickly so I may not have it word for word. I certainly hope it's true though!

I only mentioned that they were like that on NJ101.5 just because I think it may influence survey results. Listeners to that station might just say no because they would say no to any additional regulations, regardless of what they are.

It's tough to actually enforce car seat laws, but it certainly is a step in the right direction!

New Jersey already has the strictest graduated licensing laws in the nation--there is a lot other states could learn from them when it comes to auto safety regulation. This is a good step, and one sorely needed, particularly in the rear-facing domain.

Out of curiosity, which states require a harnessed seat till age 8? We might be unintentionally violating that while passing through!

I would think a mature 6- or 7-year-old would be perfectly safe in a booster. Not to mention that any kid on the larger side is going to outgrow most harnessed seats (probably by height) well before 8, no? Is this enforced?

She was saying that some states MAY require harnessing until 6 yrs. I can't think if any, most barely harness through 4.

ETA: no, she said she doesn't know of any state, it's the kids that may not be ready until 8yrs old.
