I am speaking to a moms group that I am a part of on the topic of cps. They know I am a tech and asked me to be one of the speakers for this semester. I have compiled some facts and planned to do a powerpoint type presentation with some video clips of rf vs ff in crashes, etc. I was also thinking to include info or links to sites like joels journey and kyle david miller. Anyone with any advice on what to cover/not cover feel free to weigh in! I want to make sure that I get the point across while not turning people off in thinking I'm just some wackadoo who rf my kids unnecessarily long -which some already kind of do. I've never spoken on the topic before and it's been years since I've been up in front of people so I'm nervous to boot! I have about 30-40 minutes including Q&A time. I'll be working on the presentation all weekend most likely.

My apologies if this is in the wrong forum! I wasn't 100% sure where to post this:eek:

First of all, deep breath :)

Second of all, think of your audience. Are they moms of mostly young kids? Schoolagers? Whatever it is, that is where you'll want to spend most of your time.

I personally prefer to walk through the 4 steps. Anytime I am dealing with parents, I try to level myself with them. It is not, "My kids are restrained perfectly and yours are all wrong." Instead I try to point out a) riding in the car is the most dangerous thing our kids do and b ) 9 out of ten parents are doing it wrong. I then go on to say that many of us think we're the tenth parent - I thought I was the tenth parent - but I was not, and that is why I got certified, to educate others.

I also like to put up photos of KQ's crash and the Manti crash where the car hit the deer and the toddler was killed by the airbag, side-by-side. I explain that the crashes happened two days apart, there were kids in both crashes, and ask - based on the photos - which set of kids they think fared better. Needless to say, when I explain it and scratched vehicle + unrestrained kid = fatality and crunched vehicle + restrained kids = fundamentally unharmed, it drives the point home quite quickly. It's a great icebreaker. From there I launch into the four steps, using videos and photos of cute, happy kids to support my points.

Personally, I am huge on "why." Not just "Pass the pinch test" or "Harness forever" but what the heck is that and why is it important?

I have a power point that I just finished for the same thing.

It basically starts with pictures of KQ's crash and information about it. From there, I discuss the different types of seats. Then installation. Then common mistakes. I end with a series of pictures of "what's wrong with this seat" and "this is what I look like, my age, and my weight, what seat should I ride in" slides.
