Question 86y experience

Does anyone have any experience with these? I need to get one for my son. He is 8 years old. 54" tall. 60 lbs and has roughly a 20" torso. He typically rides in his frontier 85 in booster mode. The reason I want to get this for him is because he slumps over terribly when he falls asleep. To the point where he his head is almost touching the seat in front of him. I have to wake him up repeatedly to try and get him to sit up. He has cmt 1a and is low muscle tone as well as a bunch of other things. I plan on ordering it next week. Any experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The problem is, is how you have to set up the seat belt. You basically have to turn in into a lapbelt. You add a locking clip on the opposite side than usual. Takes more time to get into the seat.

I didn't realize. Would there be a better option or is this something I can still consider. I can't have him riding like this. He falls asleep every time we are in the car and we are in the car a lot.

The 86y uses a locking clip in the normal locking clip spot. Defrost made a parental choice to use it otherwise. A locking clip used on the opposite side of the buckle will twist and deform as it slides down the belt toward the buckle in a crash because the force will pull the two pieces of webbing in opposite directions. I have personally seen a seatbelt shredded 2/3 of the way through by a locking clip used on the wrong side.

The center position in the 3rd row is lap belt only but there is no head rest. It would work until he out grew his seat in booster mode.

Just double checked and he is a lightweight. My son was a very floppy sleeper due so medical issues so I bought him a Recaro Start booster because it has adjustable shoulder pieces and a clamp that locks the shoulder belt to hold the child upright. It's not being sold anymore, but you may be able to call Recaro but they make a special needs seat on the same chassis and people have been able to call Recaro and get them at very reasonable prices. It only has an 80# limit, but it is the tallest booster I've ever seen, so it should work for your guy until he's out of a seat altogether.

Thank you so much for suggestion and advice. I will definitely give them a call and see what they can offer. I really appreciate it.

Safeinthecar is right about the setup I used; it wasn't an ideal situation and I made a choice to use the products against manufacturer's instructions.

OP, I don't know that the 86Y would be the best option for your situation. It is not a snug harness and I'm not sure it would help with the slumping. A Ride Safer Travel Vest, used with a top tether, would probably work better.
