This summer, the children and I are travelling alot. We are buying a travel trailer and just exploring :) Wanting to get them comfy seats for travel days. Current seats are:
Kamille, 9 HB Evenflo big kid (she has no room in this, unless we go backless)
Lexi, 7 HB evenflo big kid (maybe 1/2 inch before outgrowing) she falls asleep in the car a lot.
Rayne, almost 2, RF Cosco scenera. She has about 2 inches above her head, but of course no padding.

I haven't tried nearly all the seats on the market, so take this with a grain of salt. My kids favorite seats are currently; a Maxi Cosi Pria and 2013 Britax Parkway SGL. The Pria is far and away the most comfortable feeling seat we've owned. I know most people consider the Britax convertibles to be super comfy, so I'd look there too for your littlest.

Colton has only used a Turbo booster, ProBooster, and the Parkway. Of those three, the parkway absolutely has the most padding. It also has cup holders, and if were buying seats for comfy travel, cup holders would be a requirement. I have heard that the Monterey and the new Performance Booster are well padded, too.

Not a seat rec, but I bought one of these for Quinn for Christmas for when he takes long trips with my mom, etc.

It's firm enough to color on, but also very soft and bendy. It's something I feel comfortable using, it's definitely in that realm of "something I would throw at my kids head" safe enough to use in the car. I know I'm not a tech (yet!), but I do my best to get very car safety aware as I can. (Or else I wouldn't be here, lol!)
