Rear Face your infant/toddler as long as possible, read your carseat booklet to get weight and height information.
Keep your child in a 5 Point Harness seat until they are READY for a booster. usually kids are 5+ years before they can sit properly in a booster. The minimum is 4 years/40 #... Not either or... they need to be both.
There are a lot of new seats that allow you to harness your child past 40#. We have one called the Britax Regent. Great seat!
Once your child is mature enough for a booster they should use it until they are 4 feet 9 inches.
Our state laws are usually not up to date with what the experts think. So I understand some states are not following the above mentioned guidelines... These come from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Hopefully soon the States will catch on.
