iPads in cars?

as we were driving to great wolf last week, with 5 kids holding ithings, I had that aha moment when I thought what an accident would look like with those heavy objects and glass screens flying all over the car. I know they make headrest mounts for iPads, but that only really works for watching a movie... wondering if anyone has found anything safe for kids who want them in their laps? we only use them on long drives, but those are our fastest driving conditions, so a crash would be at 65mph. is there anyway to safely use them on your lap?

Personally, I don't feel comfortable with an iPad loose in the car. An iPod nano might be ok, they're fairly lightweight but it would have to be a personal decision. As a rule, I don't let anything loose in the car that I wouldn't throw at my child's head with force.
