Would this be an appropriate option for a 7 1/2 yr old (45 lbs) to use occasionally with one of his grandparents' vehicles? He uses a hbb right now. Not completely sure when we can start leting him use a nbb.

Yes. There is no evidence that a HBB is safer than a backless. As long as your kiddo can stay seated properly in a backless it's perfectly safe.

This is the perfect solution for kids in that age group. They can carry it around in their bag or backpack easily, reducing the temptation to ride boosterless "just this once" because they need to get somewhere and don't have a booster available. It's great for occasional rides with friends or grandparents.
