Curious about coats

I have never had my kids wear their winter coats in the car--just their fleeces. I saw another post about a Land's End down coat that people said was fine for the car because it is 100% down. I ordered one for Claudia and one for Oliver.

I was looking at our current coats that I am going to give away/sell, and am just wondering what makes the down acceptable for the car, but not other coats. The coats we have are 100% polyester. They are just regular winter coats. Not super puffy, but thick enough that I don't think they are acceptable for the car.

Down can be compressed before any forces are put onto it. So you should be able to cram your kid into his harness set for a fleece jacket with a thin down jacket. Whereas with a polyfill jacket, it doesn't compress as easily at first- so it would be difficult if not impossible to cram a kid into a harness set for a fleece jacket without loosening the straps. Which means in an accident, that polyfill jacket has the possibility of compressing with crash forces since it wasn't compressed prior to the crash.
