Seat safety after a crash

My cousin was in a car accident this evening. She was going 25-30mph, air bags didn't deploy, convertible car seat was installed in the car, but her son wasn't in it. The damage is on the front end. The car couldn't be driven away from the scene but everyone was okay. Is the seat still safe?

I'm glad everyone was ok!

In short, no the seat shouldn't be used again.

Some manufacturers require replacing seats after ANY crash. The rest require replacement only after serious crashes. One of the definitions of a serious crash is that the car couldn't be driven away. So no matter what criteria you go by, the seat is considered crashed and unusable now.

The car seats should be replaced and insurance should cover them. Now you might need to press the issue with the insurance company, and if they refuse get it in writing, then contact the car seat manufacturer. Please puts back if you have trouble getting them to replace the seats or want advice on new seats to buy :) .

The question you asked is, "Is the seat still safe?" According to NHTSA's research, the answer is, "Probably."

The question you didn't ask is, "Should the seat be replaced." And the answer is yes. Absolutely. All manufacturers would require replacement in the scenario you describe, and NHTSA recommends it too. Because "Probably" safe really isn't good enough when it comes to protecting our kids.
