Hi all, I am about to take my 19-month-old on his first plane ride next week. Our only carseat is the Foonf, which we plan to use RF-ing until it is no longer possible.

Has anyone had success using this seat in RF mode on a plane? My searches only yielded success at FF and one person who was NOT able to RF.

I've flown with my Foonf FF. It was a Southwest Boeing 737. Eyeballing it, it seemed like it would be really tight RF. I doubt you could use incline 3, maybe with incline 2. Don't forget the Foonf shouldn't brace on the seat in front of it but touching is OK.

OP here. Thanks to both of you for your feedback! I'm flying Delta on an Airbus A320, where the Economy pitch is about 31". I haven't gone out to measure the Foonf, but I think you two are right – it would be very tight if it would work.

I am now considering buying a second carseat (Evenflo Tribute) to use for the trip, as it seems to be a much smaller and lighter seat. Hopefully that will allow us to rear-face on the flight much more easily than the Foonf.

According to this, it is 33". I am assuming that is on recline 3 since they initially did not allow recline 2 RF. I am not sure how much more room you get moving from 3 to 2. However, even if it did just barely fit on recline 2, if the person in front of you reclines their seat the Foonf could then be braced.

If you travel fairly often, then it's always nice to have a secondary carseat just for trips, so that you don't have to repeatedly un-install and re-install it in your own car. That also gives you a spare in case you ever have a visiting relative or temporary carpool situation. And certainly almost anything is going to be lighter than the Foonf, which will be nice for getting through the airport.

All that being said, for a kid over 1 year of age and 20 pounds, I would not hesitate to use the Foonf FF if that is what works for the plane and if you prefer to have the Foonf at your destination. Commercial air travel is so safe to begin with, that the incremental benefit from RF must be pretty slight. For a long or overnight flight, RF is nice for the better sleeping angle; perhaps that is another consideration here.
