The RideSafer offers a safe, crash tested solution to lugging seats through the airport, moving big bulky conventional seats from car to car, not being able to fit 3 across or having to worry about who is picking your child up. With the RideSafer your child will always have their child restraint with them because it weighs in at less than 3 pounds and can hang on a coat hook.
The Ride Safer (RideSafer) Travel Vest has been certified for use and for sale in the USA by the manufacturer Safe Traffic System Inc since 2004. It meets or exceeds all applicable Federal Safety Standards, which in this case is FMVSS 213 and is legal to use in any state, including ones that have a "booster seat law". The RideSafer is a Child Restraint System.
There are two versions available, RideSafer 2 and RideSafer 3. Both versions offer:
The benefit of lowering the child's center of mass by having them sit directly on the vehicle seat which also maximizes the safety / energy absorbing features built into the vehicle.
Energy absorbing and dissipating layers built into the front of the vest which are intended to spread the crash forces of the seat belt out over more of the child's body
Lap and shoulder clips to properly position the vehicles Lap/Shoulder Belt low on the hips/top of the thigh and mid chest mid shoulder respectively
Optional head rest
The RideSafer 2 offers tether-ability and is certified to FMVSS 213 which requires passing the crash test with a lap only belt. The RideSafer 2 is able to pass this requirement because of the built in harness which provides upper body restraint via the tether which connects to each shoulder and the vehicle’s Tether Anchor Point. The RideSafer 2 has been crash tested in three configurations:
Lap only belt with Top Tether
Lap/Shoulder belt without Top Tether
Lap/Shoulder belt with Top Tether.
It performed very well in all tests. The benefit of using lap/shoulder belt and top tether is, even though the vehicle's seat belt is doing the majority of the restraining, the tether restrains the other shoulder thereby minimizing any rotation around the seat belt by the unrestrained shoulder. The Tether option also makes for maximum flexibility while traveling or when you are not sure if your transportation will have lap shoulder belts or not.
The RideSafer 3 meets or exceeds all requirements of the FMVSS 213 testing except the Lap Belt Only crash test requirement because it is designed by the manufacturer to be used ONLY with a Lap/Shoulder belt. This version offers adjustable shoulder height straps on the back of the vest and is not tether-able.
Safe Traffic System is in the process of crash testing a booster seat with all versions of the RideSafer which will allow the RideSafer 3 to be certified when sold and used in conjunction with their booster seat.
