Probably not the direction you're thinking of taking it, but I'd be sure to mention liability. People are always told to take their seat to the fire station, and I can guarantee you that there are firefighters in that department who are installing seats even though they're not certified.

I'd say something like: the community looks to them to help keep children safe. The firefighters see the aftermath of vehicle crashes all the time, so it's only natural they'd want to help. Unfortunately, without the proper training, they might actually be making things worse, no matter how well meaning they are. They might be putting children and the department in danger. If there were CPSTs available for them to call/schedule appointments with, the community would be better served, and the department would be better protected.

Obviously that assumes that guys are doing seat checks, which they've probably been instructed not to do. But I'd bet $1000 they are. Not all of them, but they're out there.

I suppose you could take out the liability aspect and just mention the rest of it.

Definitely play up the fact that they respond to crashes. That they should know better than anyone how important proper restraints are. There's nothing they hate worse than having to work on a dead/seriously injured kid.
