I will e-mail them, but he'll be over 36 months by then. Maybe I can just lie about his age?

I don't think you have to lie....it looks like after 36 months you can get permission if he is within the weight/height parameters of his seat. The 17" width requirement would be the hard part if they don't let you put armrests up.

A lot of foreign airlines have carseat policies like this, and unfortunately you have very little recourse, as FAA's regulations do not apply.

The rule about "no RF seats" is really a tough one for the baby. In fact, if you go to their website, I believe Aer Lingus does not allow *any* carseat to be used for children under 6 months -- your infant MUST travel on your lap. (This seems to go against common sense, but is the usual rule for UK and Irish carriers.)

For the 3.5-year-old, I'd seek the "special IAA approval" in advance and keep a written copy of their approval with you on the day of travel, in case there is any issue when you board the aircraft. (Speaking for myself, I'd probably still bring the carseat even if my request were denied.)

This presents a lot of complexity for you - any chance of changing airlines?
