Securing things in an SUV

In less than a month my 5 year old will be riding in 2 SUVS daily. She is riding in a Frontier 90. My concerns are the cargo area. There is no current barrier. I can get MIL and DH who will independently be driving her to put their cell phones and water in the locking center consul in their cars but DH currently works with tools and stores them in the back. We are talking long handled pruning shears. What can I do here? This is what he needs to go to work daily and storing them at work is not really an option. He hasn't so far been willing to store them for his own safety. Would a pet barrier help? It is a 2003 Ford Explorer. Our dog will ride along at times in the cargo area. This is going to be a 40 mile trip on the highway twice daily with DH every day. I do not think I will be able to get anything installed in MIL's car but what do you recommend I suggest?

A dog barrier would help. I would get some sort of huge Rubbermaid container in addition to that though. Like the tool boxes that go in truck beds behind the cab? Make it as easy as possible for him to use it.

Do you know if all dog barriers are the same? It isn't going to be a factory installed one as the car is old, but can I get one Ford makes or just buy one online? Will it really stop stuff from being thrown at them in a crash? I've driven a sedan all my life so this hasn't been an issue.
