Find us a second car

We need another car. Currently we have an Odyssey that's great for hauling kids and whatnot, but we need something else so we can run separate errands or whatever.

I'm thinking something smallish, along the lines of a Civic or something.

DH is thinking SUV or pickup (Pilot, F150) so he can haul things if he ever needs to.

Now, I figure on the rare occasions he needs to haul things, we can just take the seats out of the Odyssey. I want something smaller so it's cheaper, easier to fit places, better on gas mileage, etc. Considering that most of the time it will only carry the driver, I don't see the point in getting something big.

On the other hand, I do feel safer in a larger vehicle.

So we need to find some kind of compromise that makes sense to both of us.

Requirements:

* Must be able to fit three kids in the back seat (currently one RF, one FF, one booster, though the booster rider will likely 5-step soon)
* Under $25,000
* 2010ish or newer
* Not a Toyota
* Good safety ratings
* Good reliability

Ideas?

We just bought one brand new just slightly above your price point with USAA pricing. So far we are averaging 47 mpg with a manual transmission.

I had a 5 stepper, RFer, and a FFer just drive for 500 miles and everyone fit and was comfortable.

We have a Passat TDI as well and really like it, we bought it new in January through the Costco Auto Program. We paid $25,130, which was $800 under invoice for a TDI SE w/a manual. Love the car. It is fun to drive and I love being able to fill up once every 2 to 3 weeks. We are planning to take our first road trip up to Sacramento in September and can't wait to really put the mileage to the test. Our goal is up and back on no more than a tank and a half of gas (no idea what our mileage will be going over the Grapevine), which we should easily get.

I too would not get another SUV if you already have a mini van.

That Fusion Hybrid I had was nice and meets most of your requirements.

Start with the Hyundai Santa Fe, since you'll have one for a week hopefully later this month;-)

It was WAY under $25K so maybe not as nice/new as you're looking for, but I recently bought a 2009 Ford Fusion SE and I'm really enjoying it. I don't have any carseats in use these days but the backseat looks relatively friendly. It's a great size -- small enough to handle well and large enough to be safe and comfortable -- and has a lot of airbags.

I think y'all should stretch the budget a bit and get a Ferrari or something. I mean you have a kid hauler...why not get something really fun?!?
