Driving with a dog in the backseat

Just thinking ahead...

My yellow lab has a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/PetBuckle-Universal-Complete-Includes-20-Pounds/dp/B000NV9Y6C/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1374894505&sr=1-1&keywords=pet+buckle"]PetBuckle[/ame] and a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Auto-Harness-Tether-Medium/dp/B003FIUUHC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374894438&sr=8-1&keywords=bergan+harness"]Bergan harness [/ame](though mine doesn't have a tether like the one pictured ), and she is usually retrained in the car with one of those two harnesses. Both of her harnesses seriously restrict her movement to the point that she really can't move much at all.

Relatively soon, I will need to take her on some rather lengthy car trips and I would like her to have a little more freedom to move so that she can sit up, lie down, and switch sides of the backseat if the sun is in the "wrong" place.

Is there a harness/tether that will adequately restrain her in the case of an accident, but that will allow her more freedom to move around?

There wouldn't be any other "passengers" (canine or human) in the backseat during these trips. :)

I do, but I wonder if it slides, because it always winds up being where she can barely move.

I jsut found my PetBuckle tether. I wonder if I should use that and just clip her to the LATCH bar. What do you think?

I have to look at a pet harness differently than a car seat. I put the harness on snug, but leave room in the seat belt. The harness is made to keep the projectile from hurting us, but I would still want to take the dog to the vet after a crash. I also use it to keep the after-crash, freaked out dog away from strangers trying to save us.
