Tall and lean kids in PWSG?

Going on a road trip this next week and trying to figure out what to put the 9.5 year old in. I need him in the middle row to help with the 3 year old. HB Monterey doesn't work with the vehicle headrest in the captains chairs although it is his first choice for what to ride in. He could easily go in a backless but he wants the wings for the trip (note: he almost never falls asleep in the car). He is tall and 5 steps in the outboard of the 3rd row.

If he wants headwings, the only choice is the PWSG. Does anyone have experience with tall leggy kids in it? Do they get enough support? He is not the type of kid to notice if something is uncomfortable until it is REALLY uncomfortable. He does not have a normal perception of pain or discomfort (or hunger, or thirst or tiredness or just about anythign) so asking him if the seat is comfortable will result in a "yes".

How tall is he?

My DD has never complained about her PWSGL being uncomfortable. I think we usually toss a duffel bag at her feet for road trips though.

She's maybe not tall enough to not have enough support in the PW, but she definitely is getting tall for the Vivo and I make sure she always has a foot rest when we take the truck camping. She's never complained about discomfort with the foot rest there.

I would worry about a lack of leg support. I know how my 5 and (tiny) 7 yr olds fit in it. The 7 yr old prefers the Mont for support, but obviously you already said that was out. Can you put a stool on the floor?

Even if a kid is comfy in a booster, a road trip can still be too much. I agree with everyone else about giving him a footrest. We've used a small suitcase, a small cooler, a rolled sleeping bag, etc. Makes all the difference.

Would a photo of DS1 help? He's probably not the right body type... But I can show you how he fits now....he was probably at least 51 inches... 67 lbs...

I can get unlazy and put the PW in the Swagger Wagon tomorrow when I drive DS1 over an hour to a friends house. Ill get a better idea of how he likes it by his positioning in the car. Otherwise we will just go with a backless Monterrey.
