Free Car Seat from Hospital on Bringing Home Baby

When I was pregnant in 2006 I remember seeing an episode of Bringing Home Baby where the dad specifically didn't buy a car seat because he knew that if you didn't have one the hospital had to give one to you for free (his way of saving money.) This free infant car seat looked like a laundry basket with some straps and a handle. Now that I'm more car seat informed I'm wondering what that scary car seat was? Does anyone else remember that episode?

I don't remember that one but at the hospital I had my kids, they don't give out car seats. So if you don't bring one they won't discharge the baby until you either get one or somehow contact the car seat rental program through the health department.

I remember that show!! I was thinking WOW you are purposely not buying a carseat to get a free one from the hospital, it kinda made me mad (those seats should be for people who really need them).

Anyway, I don't remember the seat either, if I had to guess I would say it was one of the Dorel seats or possibly an evenflo.

That episode drove me crazy (and note they had a new seat by the end of the show, a Snugride). The people were wealthy enough to have DVD players on the back of each headrest (for a baby who couldn't see them), but couldn't go buy their own seat. Shows where baby ranks. :( Here's a seat they give away in parts of the state where some people just can't afford or don't know to take a carseat to the hospital. This one has a DOM of 04 and they are still being made. They are a horrible fit for nb though, but I guess it's better than nothing. That's the LATCH strap across it.

Just FYI, what people do not realize is nothing is ever "Free" in a hospital. It gets tacked on to your bill some how. You pay for everything that you receive. I am talking about the socks with the non-skid soles, the panty liners and pads, those cute little mesh undies. Everything!

Mine too! You should of seen the panic when my last hospital didn't have them. I'm not subjecting my real panties to THAT. Luckily I had a few left over from the previous birth since it was just 12 months before.

Oh yeah, throwaway undies  LOVE those for postpartum!

As for that link...Holy crap. I have seen so many of those old seats its not even funny. My nephew (who is almost a teen now) rode in one of those 3 in 1 Carbed/swing/seat things. It hooked to a swing, and it laid flat in the car, and then you could raise the back up for it to sit upright in the swing too.

We thought we were big stuff buying that for him, and we paid a fortune ($120 bucks, gasp!!) for it way back then!

I can top that. I had a 4th degree tear/episiotomy and bled for over a month, so that was Depends the whole time.
Luckily you can't tell you are wearing them as they are pretty much like full coverage briefs.

Not to derail the underwear thread, I thought they were actually pretty comfy but I totally remember that episode because I actually called my dh to tell him about it. It was a cosco arriva, not the crappy one pictured but the three point crappy one with the handle and I do belive a pooh cover. And I remember thinking, OMG they can afford a $30k vehicle but not a $50 carseat. If you watch the whole thing its actually the girl's parents that bought the graco travel system and the baby's dad was being a total ass about the whole thing. I would imagine that the gmother probably came over and saw what they brought the baby home from the hospital in and went right out and bought the travel system because it was there the next day.
