A crash video of what happens when a baby is in a bulky coat/snowsuit? I need to show it to my SIL who doesn't believe me.

I don't know about a video, sorry. I had a friend who wouldn't listen to me, so I had her buckle her child in the way she normally does. Then I took her child out, took off the snowsuit, and re-buckled the child without tightening the straps. I could then pull the child out of the harness without unbuckling it at all. I told her that in an accident, that snowsuit would compress to nothing and that harness would essentially be that loose. I never saw the child in that snowsuit again. I don't know if that would work very often with vary many people, but it worked this time.

Maybe if she saw how much damage can be done in a 35 mph crash, she'd realize the importance. Here is a link to more crash tests than you'd ever want to see:

I think that for most people, being "stuck" behind a driver going 35 mph is torture because it just seems so SLOW. But after doing the snowsuit test AND watching some crash tests, hopefully she'll be persuaded.

I just don't understand how when faced with visual evidence, like a loose harness strap and a basic understanding of what happens when you bump into something (let alone crash), someone could still blow off the importance of a snug harness strap.

Maybe she doesn't realize that the harness on a car seat does not have the retracting seat belt that in on the adult's seat belt. The way her child is secured when she STARTS the car is the way her child will be PROTECTED if G-d forbid there is a crash!

hth!
