Talk to me about projectiles

I take carseat safety very seriously (to the point that I'm considering pursuing certification). I'm part of an online mama forum where conversation took a strange turn from a tragic accident at a zoo to the McDonalds coffee lawsuit to sippy cups as projectiles.

I'm just wondering what the hard core car safety folks do when it comes to projectiles. What's best practice? What's recommended? What's prudent?

My general guidelines: If you would throw it at your child it's safe to have in the car.

If it would kill your child to hit them in the head, restrain it.

For that large group of inbetween objects (sippy cup, iPod, book, etc.) that's up to the parent to decide if it's worth ti.

For objects in a trunk that is open to the car I tell parents to arrange it so the heaviest and scariest things are against the backseat and down low. Then working out and up from there you put the lighter things.

Things that are projectiles that you need handy (purse, for instance) I try to zip up and put in footwells. The zipping up is recent for me. Mostly so that way if I'm in a crash my health insurance cards aren't ten feet away on the pavement. They'll still be in my purse.
